Marc M. Howard PhD

How We Listen and How We Bond

Marc, founder of The Frederick Douglass Project for Justice, joins Tricia and Doro to discuss the power of listening and the remarkable commonalities all people share. This non-profit organization is dedicated to fostering understanding and empathy between incarcerated individuals and the broader public. By facilitating conversations and interactions between prisoners and members of free society, the organization strives to challenge stereotypes, reduce recidivism, and promote a more just and equitable world. Doro and Tricia joined Marc in conversations with inmates and were touched by the humanity which binds us all. The project underscores that meaningful dialogue and deep listening, in our own lives, can drive transformative change in our relationships. Doro and Tricia are thrilled that Marc has joined us this year at the Achieving Optimal Health Conference.

Marc Howard is a leading expert in criminal justice reform, a professor of law and government at Georgetown University, and the founder of the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice. With a deep commitment to creating a more just and equitable society, Marc’s research explores the intersections of justice, punishment, and human rights. He is the author of Unusually Cruel: Prisons, Punishment, and the Real American Exceptionalism, which critiques the U.S. criminal justice system and its harsh penal practices. In addition to his academic and reform efforts, Marc frequently speaks on the importance of challenging stereotypes, promoting meaningful dialogue, and reducing recidivism through education and advocacy.
